100 Units of Universal Grinding Machines Help Small Sri Lankan Workshops Upgrade Their Spice Processing

100 Units of Universal Grinding Machines Help Small Sri Lankan Workshops Upgrade Their Spice Processing

2025-05-11

Sri Lanka’s spice industry is supported not only by large exporters but also by hundreds of small and medium-sized workshops scattered across rural areas. Many of these workshops still rely on manual or semi-manual methods to grind pepper, cinnamon, dried ginger, and other spices. While low-cost, traditional grinding methods often result in uneven powder, slow processing speed, and cross-contamination between different spices due to difficult cleaning conditions. As wholesalers and exporters raise their quality standards, small processors urgently need equipment that is hygienic, efficient, and easy to operate.

To support this transition, the customer purchased 100 units of the JB Series Universal Grinding Machine (JB-20B / JB-40B / JB-60B / JB-80B / JB-100B). These machines have been distributed across various small workshops and community-based processing points. Their compact structure requires very little floor space, making them ideal for small facilities. Operators reported that tasks which previously took nearly half an hour can now be completed in several minutes, significantly reducing labor intensity.

The JB Series machine can handle various forms of spice materials, including whole peppercorns, cinnamon sticks, and dried ginger pieces. Powder fineness can be adjusted simply by changing the internal screen, allowing users to produce coarse, medium, or fine powder according to different market demands. The entire body is made of 304 stainless steel, enabling quick washing between batches and preventing flavor mixing—an issue that previously troubled many small processors.

One of the biggest improvements noted by local users is better aroma preservation. Because the machine grinds quickly with minimal heat generation, the volatile aromatic compounds in spices are retained more effectively. This results in finished powder with a fresher, more natural flavor, which is especially important for customers who supply export-grade cinnamon powder, pepper powder, and mixed spices.

The 100 units have now been installed in multiple regions including Colombo, Galle, and Kandy. Workshop owners shared that the machines not only increased their daily output but also improved the consistency and stability of their final products. Due to the positive performance of the initial batch, the customer is planning a second-phase expansion, including more grinding machines as well as mixing and packaging equipment to support a complete small-scale spice processing line.
